One of the great things about being a Fort Myers area photographer is that you can photograph destination weddings, as we’ve done, for years and still come across a venue that you’ve not been to before. This was the case in photographing Katie and Michael’s wedding at the DiamondHead Beach Resort. Fort Myers Beach is a great place for a wedding, but it’s also a place where MANY people come to relax in the sun and enjoy local attractions. Having your destination wedding at a South Florida beach resort makes it easy for your guests to enjoy your special day without the worry of finding parking or getting towed. Also, once the wedding festivities wind down, it’s nice to know that the only ride your guests will take is on the elevator, up to their room.

South Florida Wedding Photographer on Fort Myers Beach

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good… As South Florida Wedding Photographer much of our photography is dependent on good light. Certainly photographers can add light with a flash, but nothing can compare to when we receive a sunset that gives us a glimpse of what it must have looked like on the first day. While Florida does have great sunshine, it’s not too frequently that the clouds and the sun are as amazing as it was for Lisa and Matt’s destination wedding photos at the Pink Shell Resort on Fort Myers beach.

No one can guarantee wedding photography that includes a sunset like this, but there are a few things you do to help give you the best chance of getting great images:

Work out with your photographer the timing of your wedding ceremony so that your vows are complete at least one hour before sunset.
During your wedding rehearsal identify someone who can guide family and friends to your reception as quickly as possible. This way, the bride and groom can focus on each other and your photographer can focus on capturing great moments in the best light of the day.
“Just be” – your guests are now at the reception, the anticipation of the ceremony complete, it’s time to enjoy the moment! This may sound obvious, but photos capture your emotions and however you’re feeling will be represented in your wedding photos. “Just be”…

South Florida Photographers – Trash the Dress

Being South Florida Photographers, it’s no surprise that this Rock the Frock A.K.A. Trash the Dress (TTD) photo shoot is at the beach. However, when looking for Trash the Dress ideas and inspiration I found the real question most of your are thinking is will the dress actually get trashed?

Here in Southwest Florida, this type of photography is still somewhat of an unknown. Many brides have the initial impression that it is literally about getting a photo of “trashing” the dress. The reality is that it’s whatever the Bride and/or Groom want it to be. The only requirements are you, your photographer and the wedding apparel. The location can be at the beach, downtown in a more urban setting or wherever you like. And lastly, no, you don’t even have to get the wedding dress dirty or wet! Just like all of our Photography at Leap Year Photography, this type of photo session is all about what, you, the client wants as the final image.

Tamara’s TTD session was a nice change from all the South Florida wedding photography we’ve been doing. The photo shoot was very laid back, Tamara was super easy to work with and hopefully the photos show we had all had a great time. You’ll just have to decide for yourself if the dress did in fact get trashed…

Naples Wedding Photography Leap Year Photo at Bellasera Hotel

Naples Wedding Photography by Leap Year Photography at Bellasera Hotel! It was a pleasure being Tom and Natasha’s Naples wedding photographers. The weather for weddings in Southwest Florida is perfect this time of year and could not have been any nicer.

Bellasera Hotel is a great wedding venue in Old Naples and within walking distance of historic 5th Avenue South. As a wedding photographer I love having variety in the images we capture. Bellasera’s breathtaking lobby with the spiral staircase and velvet seating added such a dramatic backdrop for our beautiful Bride and Groom, Natasha and Tom.

OK, yes, I admit it, I do watch all the weddings shows like: Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, Food Network Challenge, and Say YES to the Dress (the original, based in NY, is the best one by far, IMHO), so when I heard that Food Network’s Cake Challenge silver medal winner Karen M. Vazquez, of Naples’ Kakes by Karen, was baking our Bride and Groom’s cake, I was excited! And as you can tell by the wedding cake photo below, it was beautiful!

Fort Myers Wedding Photographer – Burroughs Home Weddings

As a Fort Myers Wedding Photographer who actually lives in the heart of Ft Myers, I love wedding venues like the Burroughs Home and Gardens that provide a glimpse into Fort Myers’ historic past. If you know Scott and I, you know this is not just some fluff for our wedding photography blog. We actually live in an old historic home, not too far from the Burroughs. Old homes like this not only provide beautiful grounds for your wedding ceremony and the photos that follow, but your wedding reception just feels more intimate, more like it’s a gathering of family and friends held at home — with none of the day after clean up.

Janine and Kurt’s wedding ceremony took place under the picturesque live oaks on the waterfront of the Caloosahatchee River. While I’ve photographed many weddings where there was no seating provided, this one was one of a few where the seating wasn’t used at all — they had a standing ovation for the entire ceremony! And why not? Janine and Kurt were a great bride and groom deserving of celebration on their fantastic wedding day.

The wedding reception took place inside the Burroughs home with the wedding dance on the giant outdoor porch. Peacock feathers were the thematic element used in the brides bouquet and hair, centerpieces, and was carried through to their beautiful wedding cake too, as seen below.

Boca Grande Wedding Photographer on Gasparilla Island

Have you been to Boca Grande? Let us take you there with some of our Boca Grande Wedding Photography on Gasparilla Island.

I’m certain that some photographers like the consistency of the same venue week after week, however, this photographer loves the variety of locations Lee County Florida provides for destination weddings. Boca Grande certainly is a great location for wedding photography! From the moment we arrived on Gasparilla Island, we could tell, with the many photographic qualities, this was the perfect place for a getaway wedding in Southwest Florida.

Boca Grande is on the Gulf of Mexico, about 60 miles from Fort Myers. It was about an hour and a half drive — by car. If you’re fortunate enough to have a boat, the ride would probably be about 30 to 45 minutes from Captiva Island. Our drive took us from Lee County, into Charlotte County, and then back into Lee.

In many respects, Boca Grande is reminiscent of Olde Florida. The giant trees on Banyan Street provide a canopy which begs you to walk under them, there’s a picture-perfect, old lighthouse at Gasparilla Island State Park, a stay at the historic Gasparilla Inn located at 500 Palm Ave, Boca Grande, FL 33921 (operating since 1913), and beautiful white beaches with true-blue waters from which to watch unbelievable sunsets — sounds like a perfect place for a perfect destination wedding to me!

There are too many other Boca locations to list, but if you looking for a great place for your wedding portraits, Sam Murphy Park should not be missed. Photography at this little hidden gem, whether on the shaded grass or by the babbling fountain, will give your Boca Grande wedding photographer lots of options. Some of Ashten and Nathaniel’s wedding photos below were taken at Sam Murphy Park. They are a truly lovely couple whom I wish a long, happy, love-filled life together. Enjoy!

Also with the nearby activities like the Sanibel – Captiva Nature Trail, J. Abby and Taylor’s wedding reception was held at the Canoe & Kayak Club. The ’Tween Waters Inn Island Resort is located at 15951 Captiva Drive, Captiva Island, Florida 33924. This picture was taken right after the cake cutting. To Smash Or Not To Smash? No Wedding cake smashed by this loving couple! While cake smashing sometimes makes for funny wedding photography, we’re always happy with the cake photos to end with a nice clean faced kiss.

Downtown Fort Myers Wedding – Photography on Sanibel Beach

The Downtown Fort Myers Florida River District is such a great spot for wedding photography! Numerous historic venues like the Burroughs Home, Heitman House, Edison and Ford estates and The Veranda are all great wedding locations. Plus, with the new Hotel Indigo, there’s plenty of room for out of town guests to stay in the heart of the city.

Ania and Matt had an intimate destination wedding in Downtown Ft. Myers. So intimate, we did not meet up with them until we photographed their nuptial celebration on Sanibel Island! Leap Year Photography is blessed to take part in all kinds of weddings — big celebrations with hundreds of guests, to small affairs, like Ania and Matt’s, where it’s just the Bride, Groom and the Sanibel beach. We weren’t sure that we wouldn’t be rained out, but I think you’ll see from the photos below, it was very picturesque day – having great subjects didn’t hurt either!

Pink Shell Resort Fort Myers Beach Weddings

As a Fort Myers Photographer I’m frequently asked what my favorite venues are for weddings in the Ft Myers area. The Pink Shell Beach Resort and Spa certainly is on the top of my list! The Pink Shell’s beach location provides a very picturesque wedding setting all photographers would love. Not only that, they have fantastic staff and other amenities that make it a great location for a destination wedding. As a Bride you’ll appreciate that the Pink Shell has a dedicated coordinator, like Dony Bruder, for every wedding. We especially liked that Dony coordinated in a ‘photography mindful’ way as well, checking in with us on the time-line of the day frequently.
